Travellers were rather rare
except when there was a fair or a market. Then it was full of pedlars and
customers, come to sell or to buy. Seated around a little wooden table
they would conduct their business with a large absinthe or coffee or a
local red wine. Some would have a meal there.
In the huge
fireplace burned a fire of wood and logs, ready whenever embers were required:
for the footwarmer and the spitroaster turning the chicken in front of
the hearth. To the right of the fireplace is the soup pot and on the other
side the clock ticks regularly. At the back of the room the sideboard contains
glasses, plates, soup tureens, crockery of every kind. The door opens onto
a staircase leading to modest rooms where travellers are able to spend
the night. |
