She used to
wear a big apron as there would be a lot of dust. She worked the distaff
with one foot and pulled the fine wisps with her left hand. She would produce
around 50 meters of thread per hour.

Before the 1st World War the cultivation
of flax was still important in our region. It was sown from the beginning
of November to the end of February and its pastel blue flower decorated
our fields in May-June. |
 |
Harvesting began in June-July, when the plants were
bundled together and stood upright to dry. |
When the seeds had been removed
the stalks were soaked for 15 days, dried and the fibres separated before
carding and spinning. The thread was used for cloths and sheets.
