The Pays de Retz... an ancient land

The Pays de Retz is a very ancient land whose oldest rocks, from the precambrian era, date back more than a thousand million years.
The region can claim a vide variety of geological relics. In one long showcase is displayed a huge collection of rocks whose origin may be seen indicated on a geological chart.
Note : The shells in the display on the left, dating from the Pliocene era, were discovered in the banks of the Lake of Grandlieu at St. Aignan by Messieurs Bellancourt and Chauvelon in November 1978.
Below is a collection of stones collected between 1890 and 1910 on the beaches at Préfailles. They were polished mechanically for one week.
To the right is a fishing weight (poids de pêche) from the Bronze Age and some 12th century oyster shells.
